HOLIDAYS IN MAREMMA

Tips on tourist itineraries between colours and flavours

The region known as Maremma stretches for about a quarter in Tuscany, between Livorno and Grosseto, with its virtual boundaries between Cecina in Tuscany and Tarquinia in northern Lazio. But Grosseto can be considered the capital of Maremma and the area around Grosseto is the heart of the Tuscan Maremma.

And those who choose it as a holiday destination, likely identify with a lifestyle based on respect for the environment, cultural heritage and traditions. Actually in Tuscany, the Tuscan Maremma is the region that best focuses on sustainable development, the priorities of which being the environment and nature. That’s the reason why those who choose to spend their holiday in Maremma pick one of the most fascinating and rich area of Tuscany: they will be lulled by a mild climate and a hospitable and wild land, a land of unspoilt countryside and ancient villages washed by a crystal-clear sea bordered by heartbreaking beaches. In ancient times this part of the region was an Etruscan colony as evidenced by the wide number of necropolis scattered throughout the territory and even giving the name of Costa degli Etruschi, to the stretch of coast between Livorno and Follonica.

What makes the Maremma a unique land and an amazing microcosm is just the richness and variety of its territory: the sea, hills and mountains merged together, reflects different colours over the landscape. The tourists itineraries in Maremma bath in various colours: the blue and crystal clear of the Argentario sea, the dark rocks of Talamone, the green of the Colline Metallifere around Massa Marittima and the brown of the Monte Amiata.

The local tourist offer respects the environment and is perfectly integrated into nature. Rather than hotels or tourist facilities too much impacting on the ecosystem, we find a great number of agritourism in Maremma as well as many camping-sites surrounded by spectacular landscape. Just as our Holiday Homes – Podere Cascatelle and Agriletizia – which respectful of local architectural traditions are perfectly merged with the surrounding landscape.

Two are the main tips for exploring the Maremma: expose yourself to the local wild environment, to its unspoilt flora and very wild fauna (green-clad expanse home of wild-boars,foxes, wild-horses, and deers) and be sure to have a car to move around freely just to discover the most of Maremma.

The Parco Naturale della Maremma, the best trails to explore the Monte Amiata, Marina di Alberese seashore, the Lago dell’Accesa, the sandy beaches in Castiglione della Pescaia, Follonica coastline for great days out, suitable for families and water sports. And, that’s not all! Don’t miss the magic atmosphere of the past in the medieval towns of Pitigliano, Suvereto, Massa Marittima and the ancient Etruscan cities of Sovana, Sorano, Roselle just to name a few. Maremma is also rich in Spas as Saturnia, Acquaforte di Bagnore, Calidario Terme Toscane di Venturina, the Terme dell’Osa, Petriolo, Pitigliano and Sorano.

A holiday in Maremma is synonymous with active experience….a journey through colours, perfumes, history, traditions, the sea, the hills, the islands and the mountains….and above all, a good life!
